Frequently asked questions

About Greenway Pass Socy — the free iPhone app for finding and tracking Charlotte-area greenways.

What's the best app to find greenways and trails near Charlotte?

Greenway Pass Socy is a free iPhone app that maps 55+ greenways across the Charlotte metro — 9 counties in North and South Carolina — in one place, with each trail's route, parking, and amenities. It's an independent community project made in Charlotte, currently a free beta on Apple TestFlight.

Is there an app that maps all the Charlotte-area greenways?

Yes. Greenway Pass Socy puts 55+ open greenways across the Charlotte metro on a single interactive map. Each trail's route is drawn to match the official Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation greenway brochure, and the map shows trailheads, parking, crosswalks, and amenities.

How do I find trail parking and amenities?

Every greenway lists its trailhead parking lots. Tap an address and it opens in Maps with turn-by-turn directions to the trailhead. Each trail page also shows its length, surface, and amenities such as restrooms and water.

Does the app cost anything, and does it work offline?

It's free, with no ads. It's currently a free beta on Apple TestFlight for iPhone. The app loads its trail data and maps over the internet, so you'll need a connection to use it.

How does it track which greenways I've walked?

Record a walk, run, or ride with whatever you already use — Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit, Strava, or just your phone — and let it sync to Apple Health. Import it in the app, and the exact stretches you covered turn gold on your map, with a completion percentage for each trail.

What devices does it work on?

iPhone (iOS), available now as a free TestFlight beta. An Android version is on a waitlist — you can leave your email to be notified.

Is it an official government app?

No. It's an independent community project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation or any government entity. Its trail data comes from public sources: OpenStreetMap, the City of Charlotte / Mecklenburg County open data portal, and the U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder.
